conflict prevention

Preventing conflict is an easier task than having to repair its consequences. Inching groups away from binary, zero-sum, combative positions to a place where they are able to intellectually compete constructively is what is necessary to prevent conflict.

The sharing of narratives is an essential first step, to be followed by exercises that accentuate the humanity of “the other.” This in turn will be followed by identifying shared values and a common ground of ideas and beliefs, the objective being emphasizing similarities while recognizing differences.

These steps, while never meant to bring the groups to total agreement, serve to build a minimum level of relationship that demystifies the other, counter stereotypes, debunk myths, and re-humanize the other. Any potential ensuing conflict between the groups is unlikely to be corrosive or threatening to civil relations between them. Respectful disagreement where necessary will instead take place.
